در یک شب سرد و برفی در سال 1910، سومین فرزند یک بانکدار ثروتمند انگلیسی و همسرش، اورسولا تاد به دنیا آمد. متاسفانه، قبل از آن که بتواند اولین نفسش را بکشد مُرد. در همان شب سرد و برفی (احتمالا سالها بعد)، اورسولا تاد به دنیا آمد، گریۀ نیرومندی سر داد و میتوان گفت، قدم در یک زندگی غیرعادی گذاشت.
اورسولا همانطور که بزرگ می‌شود، می‌میرد، پشت سر هم، به طرق مختلف. واضح است که تاریخ (و نویسنده) برایش نقشه‌هایی در سر دارد: در درون اورسولا، سرنوشت تمدن آرمیده است.
